we are meeting at 6:30p by the elephant statue in the nw park blocks... we are going to set our alarms for 7p and right before the appointed time are going to go as a group to a busy street and all stop and smile for a full minute when the alarms go off... inspired by a website of organizing mass pranks and by a comment that someone made at poetry night about having a world where everyone smiles! hope to see you there... bring as many peeps as you can!
love

FIRST THURSDAY - In Gowan Ring, Kathrine Heilesen, and more at Someday Lounge

IN GOWAN RING, KATHRINE HEILESEN, A DICTIONARY OF BLOOD THEATER,
and more TBA

First Thursday, November 2nd

At Someday Lounge
125 NW 5th between Couch and Davis

$5 21+

Our monthly First Thursday Review begins with Ms. Kathrine Heilesen,
a wandering musician from Denmark who makes frequent stops in
Cascadia; similarly-itinerant medieval folk revivalists In Gowan
Ring, and another installment of everyone's favorite disturbing
puppet dramas based on recordings smuggled out of a hospital for
the criminally insane, A Dictionary of Blood Theater.

From now on we're going easy on the First Thursday crowd, throwing
up quick and punchy performances throughout the course of the
evening so you can catch your ration of magic on the fly. The
remainder of the bill will be filled by those with the strength to
fill it—come by and check in yourself if you like.

IN GOWAN RING
http://www.somedaylounge.com/performers/in_gowan_ring
From the land of little Osmonds, comes this nomadic bunch of sprites
and pot-headed pixies, led by the enigmatic B'eirth and wielding
such modern day contraptions as sackbut, cornetto, cittern, psaltry,
zither, timbrel, whistles, bells, gongs and tons of other weird
sounding shit too numerous to mention. Epic lengthed drones are
nestled comfortably amidst some of the finest acid/psych/wyrdfolk
on this (or any other) planet.

KATHRINE HEILESEN
http://www.somedaylounge.com/performers/kathrine_heilesen
Kathrine Heilesen plays old Nordic Folk mixed with experimental
world music and folk-rock. She plays the harp, guitar, bodhran,
davul, percussion, viola and vocal.

A DICTIONARY OF BLOOD THEATER
http://www.somedaylounge.com/performers/blood_theater
In a sense, there is no true, "real" theatre, only a black Cadillac
crushing life and squeezing the heart out of us, one act at a time.
It is appropriate then, that we cry, and mourn crushed lives,
appropriate to watch as well as to perform. Why puppets? Because,
by branch and root, from head to foot, there is not, nor art there
be, anything so deep so sad so fun so thought-provoking so shamelessly
despised so unrehearsed and prized as the beautiful blank darkness
that descends upon you as the flesh is opened to let another story
bleed forth.
The first installation of our new show Local man claims to have
seen god but can't give an account of what he saw (Decipher that!)
opens October 27 and runs throught the next two nights at the Someday
lounge in Portland Oregon, moving to other venues down the west coast
through October and November. This program deals with the erosion
of sanity in the modern world. It is a puppetry program, including
live actors and found objects, trash and treasures paraded before
you eyes.

Performance Art does it have a place at first thursday

Cirkus pandemonium and the Underscore Orkestra draws a nice crowd and encourages the crowd to support the local artist, media and performance but last first thursday we were asked to move out of the art walk area, We still drew a large crowd but at the same time we were informed next month it would be to busy for any type of performance. Would like suggestions on spot to perform our art, and if it is welcome or if the art walk is just for Media art and street performance is only tolerated to maintain a politically correct appearance.

“New Portlander” Artist Available to Help on Your (Paying) Project.

Hi everyone. I have just moved to Portland, and I am looking for an artistic, dynamic, and growing environment in which to offer my services.

A bit about me. I am an intelligent, creative, talented and computer-savvy woman. I am a power user of Photoshop, and also knowledgeable in other digital paint/design tools. I have several advanced degrees, including one in Fine Arts, and one in Urban Policy. Also, I have both studied and worked as a physical sculptor. I am actively showing my artwork both nationally and internationally. (You may see my latest painting/photo work at www.jillahlstrand.com).

My management skills could also be of use, as I have honed them in the pursuit of my own business, as well as the management of large government projects.

If you have any such needs, or ponderings on who might, I would love to hear them!

Cheers,
Jill

this tribe isn't too active, huh? but i guess 1st thursdays hasn't been active thru the winter time? well, i just did my first Last Thursday, and it wasn't all that profitable... altho it was a good experience. but i am really hoping that first thursdays goes better for me, and from what i have heard, i think it might. i have applied to the Urban Art Network to get a spot in their area- but that isn't totally necessary, is it? is it the same kind of thing- set up wherever you can? but it seems like that crowd might be more of a buying crowd, and of folks that are into spending more money on art. am i right? any words of wisdom, folks?
thank you!!
